Senior Prefects 1962-63

Senior Prefects 1962-63: In June 2003, the Senior Prefects of 1962-63 met for a reunion dinner in the splendid surroundings of a private dining room in the Savoy Hotel, London. The reason for the event being little more than to celebrate the 40th anniversary of leaving BGS. Memorable anniversaries clearly figure largely in the mind of Gildersleeve, who organised the event - a similar one to celebrate 25 years was held in 1988. Sadly two members of the 1988 reunion, Ian Butler and Richard Endsor are now deceased, and their presence was sorely missed. The festivities started with Dom Perignon, meandered through other fine wines and an 8 course meal before ending in the small hours with copious and never ending quantities of Croft 1963. Traditional toasts were drunk to Old Grammarians wherever they may be and to absent friends. John Gildersleeve presented everyone with a framed replica of the old wooden board which had originally sat in the window of the HPCP Common Room, naming that year's incumbents - the original having been purloined as an end of term prank and retained carefully for 40 years. Breakfast was a sober affair with only a hardened few making an 0730 reveille - the rush came some two hours later. The assembled throng numbered thirteen, twelve from the original prefects room and Reg Mitchell. Reg has always been an honorary member of the group despite having been a Senior Prefect and Head of House (Dawnay) the previous year. The gathering was all the more remarkable given the distances some had travelled, the group photo is probably the best way of naming everyone.
